Acetyl-l-carnitine is a form of carnitine synthesised by the body. It is not known to occur in foods.
Acetyl-l-carnitine has been shown to positively influence affect fatty acid, carbohydrate and amino acid metabolism.
Taking Acetyl-l-carnitine as a supplement increases plasma and cerebral spinal fluid concentrations of it and the compound is transported across the blood brain barrier. This has been shown to be beneficial in the treatment of aging, chronic degenerative diseases and slowing the progression of mental deterioration in Alzheimer’s disease and following spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury.
