Vanilla is a popular food flavouring. Various forms of it are available. Those derived from the vanilla bean have been reported to show anti-mutagenic activity and to inhibit chemical carcinogenesis. They inhibited invasion and migration of cancer cells and inhibited enzymatic activity of MMP-9 secreted by the cancer cells.
Several neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzeimer’s and Parkinson’s as well as septic shock and inflammation involve formation of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species - oxidisation and nitration. Vanillin was evaluated for its ability to scavenge or inhibit the production of these and found effective.
It has been reported that by taking vanilla you may no longer need to use a deodorant.
