Rosehip
Traditionally used in European and Native American remedies, rose hips are the bright red or orange berry-like fruits of the rose bush left after the bloom has died. As far back as 77 AD the Roman writer Pliny noted 32 disorders that responded to treatment with preparations from the rose.
Rosehips are used fresh, dried, or as a powder, with a tart, slightly sweet flavor. They’re packed with vitamin C, antioxidant flavonoids with anti-inflammatory properties, and minerals like magnesium and calcium. Often used in teas, jams, or supplements, rosehips are known for their health-boosting properties. Due to their anti-inflammatory properties, rose hips are used to relieve the pain of arthritis, osteoarthritis and rheumatism.
Rose hips also contain carotenoid pigments, plant sterols, tocotrienols and a very high level of anthocyanins, catechins and other polyphenolics, known phytochemicals to protect against cancer and cardiovascular disease.
They also contain up to 5% by weight of pectin, a soluble fiber that protects against cardiovascular disease and helps leach toxins from the body.
In clinical trials rose hips reduced C-reactive protein levels. These are inflammation markers.
It is claimed or proven that consuming rosehips does the following:
- Boosts immunity
- Promotes healthy skin
- Reduces inflammation
- Supports joint health
- Boosts energy levels
- Enhances overall vitality
- Supports heart health
